STOKE 46 HITMEN 44

Saturday June 03, 2017
‘It feels like a win’ was Buxton Boss Jason Pipe’s reaction after this National League Knockout Cup tie at Stoke. Had it not been for a couple of unlucky breaks he may well have been right!

This was a tremendous team effort by the Hitmen and easily their best away performance of the season so far.

It began well in heat one as Max Clegg raced to his first win of a faultless 5 ride maximum and the reserves race was dominated by a rejuvenated Lee Geary gaining his first heat win of the season on his way to an 8+1-point haul. The teams continued to trade blows and were neck and neck until heat 8 when the home side registered the only maximum heat win of the evening. It turned out to be pivotal to the overall result. Supporting Clegg was Guest and track specialist Ben Wilson who weighed in with 9 but it was the all-round team performance that most impressed Pipe

‘The boys were totally dialled in by the end of the meeting and they now wish we’d had a home meeting tomorrow! We were without Ben (Basford) and rider replacement put a little bit more pressure on the team but they coped really well. They are riding with a lot more confidence and there is a tremendous team feeling. To win matches we need to score right throughout the team right from the number one to reserve’

The overall score on aggregate was an easy win for the Potters as they had carried a 19-point lead from the first leg into the tie but the performance gives cause for optimism going forward,

Pipe also hinted at a solution to the Ben Basford position. ‘Ben rides his last meeting for us next week against Mildenhall as he agreed to. There are moves afoot to sort a permanent replacement and we hope to announce something over the next couple of weeks’

Buxton return to the track next Sunday (June 11th) with a home meeting at Hi-Edge 3pm start.
